January 2006 Highlights - Novell Professional Resource Suite

cd/dvd breakdown

Make it a year of new discoveries and tangible results! The first step toward this goal is to take advantage of the hundreds of tools, resources, and utilities in this month's update. First, you can review in-depth information about background processes in LogicSource® for eDirectory™. Then, you can begin exploring more than three dozen new bonus utilities, two technical white papers, 55 new patches, essential documentation, 482 Support Knowledgebase documents (TIDs), and 217 Product Communities updates.

New Software

Stronger security, easier management, and faster provisioning—these are just a few of the benefits you can explore when our newest software releases. Within the next couple of months, you'll receive access to evaluation versions of the following Novell® products:

Novell Identity Manager 3

Novell Identity Manager 3 simplifies the process of identity management. It automates user provisioning and password management throughout the user lifecycle—delivering first-day access to new users, modifying or rescinding access as necessary across all systems, and synchronizing multiple passwords into a single strong password.

Novell iManager 2.6

Novell iManager 2.6 is a cross-platform release of the Novell Web-based management console. This version is compatible with the new Novell Virtual Directory Services and provides enhanced downloads of plug-in modules.

Novell Audit 2.0

Novell Audit 2.0 delivers a secure logging and auditing infrastructure. It collects security and system-event data and filters the collected information to trigger real-time notifications and provide real-time monitoring and centralized logging to single or multiple data stores.

These products are just the beginning! If you are interested in the latest open source software, stay tuned: new versions of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Novell Linux Desktop, and SUSE Linux will be releasing during the first half of 2006!

Advanced and Expanded Resources

Updated LogicSource for eDirectory

Have you taken a close look at your directory tree lately? If you want to know one of the reasons it's running so smoothly, check out this month's update to LogicSource for eDirectory. A new chapter, located in the "Understanding eDirectory Processes" section, discusses the Janitor background process.

The purpose of the Janitor process is two-fold. First, the Janitor process purges all purgeable objects in the eDirectory database. Second, the Janitor process maintains the Access Control Lists (ACLs) throughout the tree. These processes ensure that your tree remains uncluttered and performs at top efficiency.

Bonus Utilities

Get more out of your systems! By installing the latest bonus utilities, you'll improve both the security and overall functionality of your Novell software. A small sampling of new utilities is listed below:

  • Designer for Identity Manager—provides a highly visual, client-based tool for designing, debugging, deploying, and documenting your identity management solutions
  • REXX Program—delivers a REXX program that can be used by the Identity Manager RACF Driver to execute NATURAL ADABAS programs
  • Favorites for GroupWise—transfers your Internet shortcuts to the GroupWise client
  • SkypeWise—integrates Skype with GroupWise: see who's online, start IM chats, and receive voice calls from within GroupWise
  • File Strainer—enables you to deploy file-storage restrictions based on a combination of content type, eDirectory identity, file size, and path (extension)
  • HK User Registry Editor—imports settings to any HKUser tree
  • SQL2Audit—processes audit events stored in an AUX table

Software Licenses Not Working?

If the licenses for your evaluation software are not working, that's probably because you are still using the old 2005 software licenses. By downloading the new 2006 licenses from the Subscriber Portal, you'll get immediate access to the evaluation software you use and enjoy. You will also find standard licenses on CD 1A, which shipped in the November 2005 release.
