Updated Software

PlateSpin Migrate 9.1

PlateSpin Migrate is a workload portability solution that automates the movement of server workloads—operating systems along with their applications and data—over the network among physical servers, virtual hosts, and image archives. PlateSpin Migrate remotely decouples workloads from the underlying server hardware and streams them to and from physical or virtual hosts, all from a single point of control.

PlateSpin Recon 3.7.3

Successful data center initiatives such as server consolidation and capacity management require planning, analysis, and ongoing monitoring to ensure a maximum return on investment. Novell PlateSpin Recon is a sophisticated planning and analysis solution that helps enterprises to optimize the data center by collecting hardware and software inventory for all workloads and remotely gathering workload utilization statistics for a clear and concise picture of what is running in the data center and how resources are being used.

LibreOffice 3.4 for Windows

LibreOffice for Windows is a full productivity suite supported by Novell, which provides word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database capabilities. With LibreOffice for Windows, enterprises can dramatically lower costs, maximize productivity, while gaining the key functionality of Microsoft Office and interoperability with Microsoft Office file formats.

Novell ZENworks 11 SP1

Novell ZENworks 11 SP1 provides comprehensive management of Windows and Linux servers and workstations, collectively referred to as devices. The architecture of ZENworks 11 SP1 is built on Web services technology and provides industry-leading desktop, laptop, and handheld server management, all administered through a Web browser. ZENworks 11 SP1 uses a single adaptive agent for all services and uses a database to store all ZENworks information while still leveraging your corporate directory for user-based management. By using LDAP, ZENworks 11 SP1 can natively provide both device-based and user-based management to the existing directory customers (both Novell eDirectory and Microsoft Active Directory), without the need to migrate and manage the user objects. ZENworks also provides fully integrated Asset Management, Patch Management, and Endpoint Security Management services.

Novell Access Manager 3.1.4

Novell Access Manager 3.1 SP4 is a comprehensive access management solution that provides secure access to Web and enterprise applications. It also provides seamless single sign-on across technical and organizational boundaries, based on industry standards including Secure Assertions Markup Language (SAML) and Liberty Alliance protocols.

Access Manager 3.1 SP4 combines simplified deployment and administration with advanced capabilities, such as multi-factor authentication, role-based access control, Web single sign-on, data encryption, and SSL VPN.

Technical White Papers

This month's release includes 3 new white papers which are sure to help you sharpen your knowledge of Novell products and solutions:

  • Capability Comparison - ZENworks 11 and SCCM Over the last decade, Novell ZENworks has developed a reputation as one of the industry's most complete and capable solutions for centrally configuring and managing endpoints in complex and heterogeneous networking environments. With Novell ZENworks, thousands of organizations ( See http://www.novell.com/success ) have discovered the benefits of using a policy and user-based approach to simplify and automate software and patch deployment, asset tracking, endpoint security, OS migration and a long list of other routine endpoint management tasks. Novell ZENworks allows IT organizations to perfectly align their desktop environments with established business policies and shift more time, money and resources away from mundane, repetitive tasks and toward strategic IT initiatives.

Novell ZENworks 11 represents another major step toward completely automated and nearly effortless endpoint management—by bringing the family of ZENworks products together under a single integrated platform and then extending all those capabilities to a wider range of Windows and Linux platforms and devices.

Finding the best possible approach to configuration management has a major longterm impact on an IT organization. This document has presented why the unique management paradigms in Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11: management by exception, device-based and user-based management, and strong capabilities to address a diverse set of endpoint management challenges, positions Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11 as a credible alternative to Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager.

  • Identity and Access Management: The Foundation for Secure, Efficient, and Compliant Enterprise Application Environments IDC research shows that large organizations are looking to increase security, protect privacy, and achieve compliance as they move to embrace new technologies and continue to refine business processes. A key component of this strategy rests on IAM and GRC technologies. Global companies and international industries are looking for best practices that allow them to maximize investments in their current applications infrastructure — for instance, investments in SAP applications — and integrate them with industry-proven IAM and GRC solutions. This paper focuses on the SAP/NetIQ partnership and how it can benefit customers facing these challenges.

  • Comparing labor costs:- Novell ZENworks Configuration Management v11 vs Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3 This whitepaper exams the labor costs for Microsoft's System Center Configuration Management 2007 R3 and Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11 across a range of common activities. It shows that typical mid-sized organization with 2,500 desktops and 250 applications will pay $178,220 USD to use Microsoft's System Center Configuration Management 2007 R3 compared to $70,880 USD Novell ZENworks Configuration Management 11 over a four year period.
