Updated LogicSource for NetWare
Get more out of NetWare! The Novell Remote Manager (NRM) utility includes so many figures about memory information that it's helpful to have detailed explanations of those figures for most effective use of the utility. This month, the updated LogicSource for NetWare outlines the remaining screens and numbers that you see in the View Memory Config option in the NRM utility. This includes all of the entries on the following screens and their corresponding links:
- Used By Virtual Memory System
- To Virtual Memory Cache Pool link
- To Swap File Information link
- To Virtual Memory Statistics link
- Total System Memory link
This update also examines the changes to memory information in the NRM utility in NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 3; it explores how this memory information is pertinent in troubleshooting memory issues; and it explains how to configure the NRM utility.
You will find helpful information in the new section that outlines all the steps that a NetWare 6.5 server running Support Pack 1 goes through when you run the SERVER.EXE file from the server's DOS prompt. This section then covers the step-by-step process of what the NetWare 6.5 server must do to unload itself when you type DOWN at the server's console prompt.
In addition, LogicSource for NetWare examines the NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs) that load during Load Stage 1 as the CDBE.NLM continues to bring up the NetWare 6.5 server and its services. In particular, Load Stage 1 loads the following NLMs:
- LSL.NLM—the Novell NetWare Link Support Layer module
- CONNMGR.NLM—the NetWare Connection Manager module
- LFS.NLM—the NetWare Logical File System module
- FILESYS.NLM—the NetWare File System module
- UNICODE.NLM—the NetWare Unicode Runtime Library (Unilib-based)
- LOCNLM32.NLM—the NetWare NWLocale Runtime Library
- NSS.NLM—the Novell Storage Services module
This month's update also provides in-depth explanations of the logical and physical memory address ranges. It offers ways to view memory through various utilities that can help you eliminate potential fragmentation issues. Finally, it suggests various methods for troubleshooting memory fragmentation. By becoming familiar with this LogicSource section, you can identify memory problems before they force you to reboot the server. You can also learn how to "tune" the server so that memory problems don't affect productivity.
