Updated LogicSource for NetWare
Novell Remote Manager Utility
Get more out of NetWare! The Novell Remote Manager (NRM) utility includes so many figures about memory information that it's helpful to have detailed explanations of those figures for most effective use of the utility. This month, the updated LogicSource for NetWare outlines the remaining screens and numbers that you see in the View Memory Config option in the NRM utility. This includes all of the entries on the following screens and their corresponding links:
- Used By Virtual Memory System
- To Virtual Memory Cache Pool link
- To Swap File Information link
- To Virtual Memory Statistics link
- Total System Memory link
This update also examines the changes to memory information in the NRM utility in NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 3, it explores how this memory information is pertinent in troubleshooting memory issues, and it explains how to configure the NRM utility.
Novell Storage Services
You can also take an in-depth look at Novell Storage Services (NSS) in NetWare. This month's LogicSource for NetWare update explores the features that NSS offers you as a system administrator. You'll learn how NSS sets itself up, what its dependencies are and how to configure it for optimal use.
This update also reviews the tuning parameters that help you get the most out of NSS for your NetWare environment. Specifically, it provides information about the Maintenance, Status, Control and Tuning parameters that you can see by typing NSS /? at the server console prompt. In addition, you can learn more about some occasional NetWare memory problems that are related to NSS functionality.
Server Memory Issues
And finally, because of increasing interest in server memory issues, this month's LogicSource focuses on clarifying existing information in both the "Understanding NetWare Memory Architecture and Troubleshooting Memory Fragmentation" and "Using the Novell Remote Manager (NRM) Utility for Troubleshooting NetWare 6.5 Servers" sections.
You can learn more about the changes that affect memory information in the NRM utility in NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 3. The update also discusses which portions of this memory information are pertinent in troubleshooting your memory problems. For example, LogicSource discusses the following new enhancements in NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 3:
- Memory fragmentation has been significantly decreased through algorithm changes that affect how logical memory address space is allocated.
- A new NSS API allows an administrator to change the File Cache Maximum Size line on-the-fly without rebooting the system.
- Memory auto-tuning is enabled, so systems do not have the memory problems that surfaced in previous versions.
- Initial allocations to the memory pools are faster because once the Registry is set, the Virtual Memory Manager can "stir the tanks."
