Indications

This update should be installed if you encountered stability problems with our previous update kernel.

Contraindications

If there are no stability problems, update is not necessary.

Problem description

This kernel fixes several stability problems:

Crashes on some machines with aic7xxx SCSI driver
Rare corrupted LVM snapshots on ReiserFS
P4 illegal instruction under high SMP load
Theoretical shared memory locking deadlock
AMD cache attribute bug

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update provides an update to the SuSE kernel for mutiprocessor systems without PAE (Physical Address Extension - usually Pentium I based systems). Please test whether you have installed k_smp by entering this command:
rpm -q k_smp
The command should return something like this in case you are running k_smp:
k_smp-2.4.18-136
The command will return "package k_smp is not installed" if you are not running the SuSE default kernel. Please have a look at the other available patches in that case:

To install the kernel please run these commands:
rpm -Uhv k_smp.rpm mk_initrd /sbin/lilo -v
Now reboot the machine to activate the new kernel:
shutdown -r now
Substitute "now" with an appropiate amount of time (eg. +10 for 10 minutes) if you want to give local users a chance to log out before the system goes down.
