This update should be installed if you encountered stability problems with our previous update kernel.


If there are no stability problems, update is not necessary.

Problem description

This kernel fixes several stability problems:
  • Crashes on some machines with aic7xxx SCSI driver
  • Rare corrupted LVM snapshots on ReiserFS
  • P4 illegal instruction under high SMP load
  • Theoretical shared memory locking deadlock
  • AMD cache attribute bug


Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

Installation notes

This update provides an update to the SuSE default kernel (k_deflt). Please test whether you have installed k_deflt by entering this command:
rpm -q k_deflt
The command should return something like this in case you are running k_deflt:
The command will return "package k_deflt is not installed" if you are not running the SuSE default kernel. Please have a look at the other available patches in that case:

To install the kernel please run these commands:
rpm -Uhv k_deflt.rpm mk_initrd /sbin/lilo -v
Now reboot the machine to activate the new kernel:
shutdown -r now
Substitute "now" with an appropiate amount of time (eg. +10 for 10 minutes) if you want to give local users a chance to log out before the system goes down.
