Registering and Updating Open Enterprise Server Overview

Updated 26 Jul 2005

Open Enterprise Server (OES) is updated with patches from the Novell update server at https://update.novell.com/data. To download and install patches, see "Patching an OES Linux Server" in the OES Linux Installation Guide at http://www.novell.com/documentation/oes/install_linux/data/bxlu3xc.html

Note: Never install updates that appear in Red Carpet/rug, only install patches. The rpm files that make up a patch also appear to be updates to the Red Carpet/rug client. The rpm files will be installed by their corresponding patch, so they never need individual installation through the update functionality.

In summary, the update process is completed as follows:

  1. Obtain a valid OES activation code.

  2. Install OES. During installation, key updates can be installed without using an activation code. Most patches, however, can only be installed after installation.

  3. Install patch-11371 and restart the Red Carpet Daemon (enter rcrcd restart in a terminal as root). This patch resolves Red Carpet Daemon issues (the mechanism used for patching).

  4. Install the remaining patches from the OES channel.
