Dear Ab-end: I have Windows 95 workstations installed on my network and I just purchased a USB (Universal Serial Bus) scanner for my department. I cannot find the USB scanner driver on my Windows 95 CD. I also tried finding the driver on Microsoft's Web site, but with no luck. Can you tell me what I need to do to get my USB scanner running?

Dear Scanning: You are probably running the original release of Win95, 4.00.950. You may also be running Service Pack 1 of Windows 95 (4.00.950 A). To check this, from the Windows 95 desktop, right-click My Computer and select Properties. Under System, note the release number of Windows 95. If it is either of the two mentioned above, you must update your copy of Windows 95. Neither of these releases has USB support.
Support for USB requires at least release B of Windows 95 (4.00.950 B). Release C will also work. The problem is that these are OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) releases, and are only bundled with systems and are not commercially available. Using releases B or C would require reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows 95 and all your applications.
You have two options: you can upgrade to Windows 98 which has support for USB, or you can take the USB scanner back and exchange it for a parallel port or SCSI model. An exchange will not require upgrading Windows 95.
