Disabling Automatic Server Operation Following Abends

Articles and Tips: tip

When a NetWare 5 server abends (experiences an Abnormal End), it doesn't normally halt all of its operations, as it did in the days of NetWare 4 and earlier. Instead, NetWare 5.x and above attempts to continue operating, in spite of the abend. It prepends the console command prompt with a number, such as "<1>" or "<2>," to reflect the number of times an abend-and-restart cycle has occurred.

Of course, this does not preserve the abend and server state information. As a result, this makes debugging the problem very difficult in many circumstances. If you want to cause all server operations to halt following an abend, enter the following command at the server console:

set developer option = on

Also, entering this SET parameter at the server console prompt will effectively do the same thing:

set auto restart after abend = 0
