Suggestions for Creating Volumes in NetWare 5

Articles and Tips: tip

Adapted from NetWare 5 Overview and Installation Guide

An integral part of installing NetWare is the creation of volumes. In NetWare 5, you can create two types of volumes: traditional NetWare volumes and Novell Storage Services (NSS) volumes. Traditional NetWare volumes support all of NetWare's volume technologies including suballocaton, compression, and Transaction Tracking System (TTS). An NSS volume is an advanced file system that enhances the management of large files, large volumes, name spaces, and storage devices.

When you create volumes, keep in mind the following tips:

  • Select free space within the NetWare partition to create a traditional volume.

  • Select free space outside the NetWare partition to create an NSS volume.

  • Reserve volume SYS for the NetWare file system files; create one or more additional volumes for applications and data.

  • Volume SYS must be a traditional volume. All other volumes can be NSS or traditional.

  • Do not create volumes that span storage devices unless you are using an enhanced fault tolerance technology such as mirroring or RAID. Without fault tolerance, if any of the spanned storage devices fails, all data on the entire volume will be lost.
