Q.

My team is working on a Web site integrating management and security. All users will access this server via the Internet; no one will access this server from the inside. We want to secure some section of the Web server using Novell eDirectory (LDAP), not the Corporate Edition version. Our environment includes:

  • Windows NT 4 Server with Service Pack 5+

  • Internet Information Server (IIS) 4

  • ASP (Active Server Page)

  • ADSI 2.5 from Microsoft

  • Netscape 4+ and Internet Explorer 4+

We have several questions:

  • How can we establish the security between IIS 4.0 and eDirectory?

  • Is it possible to synchronize the Access Control List (ACL) from Microsoft with LDAP eDirectory?

  • Is it possible to use the Gateway/Client Services for NetWare from Microsoft with eDirectory to be able to make management possible from Novell ConsoleOne?

  • What about the migration from NT 4 to Windows 2000?

A.

As I understand it, you want to check your IIS users (names, passwords, privileges) against an existing NDS database. There are several possibilities for writing a scripting application that is capable to reach remote NDS database from IIS platform. For example, you can:

  • Use AX controls from Novell (may require NetWare client installed on IIS)

  • Use LDAP and LDAP libraries from Novell to write your own AX/DLL/ISAPI

  • Use C libraries for NDS to write your own AX/DLL/ISAPI (requires NetWare client installed)

  • Use Novell ADSI provider for NDS (requires NetWare client on IIS)

There are many possibilities; check http://developer.novell.com/ndk for technologies Novell offers to access the NDS database. (Answer provided by Rostislav Letos of Novell Developer Support)
