NW51 and NW6 Servers Running Out of Memory

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I have servers with up to 4GB of memory, but I still get messages on the server console indicating that the server is running out of memory. This message mostly happens when I am running a backup or any kind of Java process and after the server has been up for a week or two. This happens on both my NetWare 5.1 and NetWare 6 servers. Do I have a memory leak? If so, is it in NetWare or in my backup or in the Java applications?

A.

Dear Out: What you are probably seeing is memory fragmentation and not a memory leak, per se. During specific instances of allocating and freeing memory, memory fragmentation can occur, thereby reducing the largest available space in memory for new memory allocations. To improve the process of allocating and freeing memory, Novell has released NW56UP3.exe, which contains updated SERVER.EXE files for NW51SP5, NW51SP6, NW6SP2 and NW6SP3. If the problem remains after you apply the update, your problem is a memory leak in your backup or Java applications.
