Maximum NetWare OS Cache Memory

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

I work for a large computer company that creates software images to place on the computers we manufacture. We use NetWare servers (5.x and 6.x) to store these images. My question is what is the maximum amount of cache memory the NetWare Operating System supports. I suspect it is 4GB. This concerns me since some of our images are almost at 4GB and soon will be greater than 4GB.

Max-ing Out Memory

A.

Dear Max-ing: You are right about the 4GB memory limitation, but it is important to note that this is not a NetWare limitation, but rather an Intel Microprocessor limitation. Intel's 32-bit processors max out at 4GB supported memory due to that being the architectures maximum amount of uniquely accessible address location.

The best way to get around this will be to upgrade to the next version of NetWare, currently code-named Nakoma. The NSS technology within will surpass the 4GB limit.
