Finding File IDs in GroupWise

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

I have an issue with one user's file ID (FID) in GroupWise and I don't know whose it is. How do I get a listing of users with GroupWise accounts including their FIDs?

Dear Fred: There are several ways to find this out.

  1. Open each user's Properties page in the Console One utility and look under the GroupWise tab. This is very labor intensive and it's easy to miss the needle in the hay stack.

  2. Or you can download a utility to help you with this search. I will highlight Novell's utility, but there are quite a few available in the shareware community (http://www.novellshareware.com is one location).

Download and install the GroupWise Import/ Export utility at http://download.novell.com/filedist/pages/PublicSearch.jsp. Select See downloads, then scroll down to the GroupWise 6 area.

  • Highlight anything in the NDS view.

  • Click on the Tool pull-down menu, GroupWise Utilities, Export.

  • When the utility comes up choose User for the NDS object.

  • To the exported properties add:

CN

Sur Name (if you are using the NWAdmin version it is !LastName and it is at the top of the list)

Given Name

NGW File ID

NGW Post Office

  • Enter a file location and name (i.e. C:\GroupWiseInfo.txt).

  • Select [Root] as the starting context.

  • Select to export from subordinate contexts.

  • Select Add attributes to the first line.

  • Choose Run.

This provides a comma-delimited text file that can be manipulated in Excel, Access, or the program of your choice.

Only users with a GroupWise account will have a NGW File ID (FID). If you sort on this column you can easily locate the user with the issue. If you don't mind getting away from a nice interface, Nlist is easier and it's freeware:
