NetWare Booting from a SAN

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

I have a work associate who is dealing with a five-node cluster connected to a Xiotech 6509 SAN using QLogic fibre cards. He wants to know if NetWare 6 will boot from this type of Storage Area Network (SAN) or for that matter any SAN?

Sanning in the San Fernando Valley

A.

Dear Sanning: The short answer is Yes. However, you will want to read further because there are some potential risks involved. Setup of the SAN device is vendor- specific and it is recommended that you contact the appropriate vendor to make sure the hardware is up to date on BIOS/firmware revisions and can be configured in this manner.

This requires Logical Unit Number (LUN) masking and assigning specific LUNS to each server connected to the SAN device. Failure to properly mask LUNs and make those specific LUN-to-server assignments in the SAN will result in data corruption and the inability to boot from the SAN.
