Novell Nterprise Branch Office Security

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

I am curious about the security featured in Novell's new Nterprise Branch Office product. I have read, with interest, the article in a recent AppNotes magazine. However, the article does not touch on the details of security. Any and all information would be helpful in my deciding whether to make this product a part of my company's solution.

Dear Security-minded Sarah: Nterprise Branch Office, just like it's older brother NetWare, uses Novell International Cryptographic Infrastructure (NICI) and Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS) to secure the authentication. The passwords are encrypted and must come from a trusted source to be authenticated.

If you require a general overview, with a little bit of depth, check out the NetWare documentation at: http://www.novell.com/documentation. If you need a lot more depth, may I recommend Network Security Private Communication in a PUBLIC World, by Charlie KAufman, Radia Perlman, and Mike Speciner (ISBN 0-13-061466-1). This book delves quite deeply into security in general, but also has a section specifically devoted to NetWare.
