Getting NetWare 5 and 6 Servers to Show Same URLs in SLP Services

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

I added a NetWare 6 server to my NetWare 5 tree, and my NetWare 5.1 servers do not show the same URLs when I type

DISPLAY SLP SERVICES <Enter>

at the NetWare server console. I cannot seem to get the NetWare 6 and NetWare 5.x servers to agree. A Directory Agent is involved, but some of the servers are not registering their services to it.

"Server Alignment" Leroy

Dear Leroy: NetWare 6 servers default to a scope name of DEFAULT and don't support the NetWare 5.1 server's default of UNSCOPED. If your Directory Agent (DA) presently resides on a NetWare 6 server, you have to manually configure all NetWare 5.1 servers to use the scope name "DEFAULT." If your DA resides on a NetWare 5 server, you have to switch from UNSCOPED to a manually defined scope name, as NetWare 6 doesn't support UNSCOPED.

In the Monitor utility, select Server Parameters, then Service Location Protocol. You need to add all servers to the same scope name and you must reboot the server to change scope names on the server. You may also have to delete and recreate DA and Scope objects for a scope name change.
