Prevenling Users from Saving Files Locally

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I have two questions. First, being a government scientist, I do a lot of research and development. As a result, I create confidential documents like formulations and details of experiments conducted. These documents, which are stored on a NetWare 5.x server, need to be secure so that users can view them, but not copy, edit, or even print them. I understand that ZENworks for Desktops 3 allows control over workstations by blocking access to various drives, DOS, and the printing environment. Is it possible to prevent users from saving anything to their local drives?

Second, we can allow only specific applications to be run. The problem we have come across is that, although using ZENworks policies allows us to hide drives, users can still save these documents using the "File Save As" option and entering the entire path like "C:\testfile.doc." Can the ZENworks administration files be modified so that such policy changes can be incorporated? -- ZEN-zapped in Zanzibar

A.

Dear ZEN-zapped: Novell Modular Authentication Services (NMAS) may be a better solution for your requirements--it will let you control access to the NetWare volume with strong authentication. But this is only a solution for NetWare volumes. As far as security on your local workstations, it depends on the platform. For Windows NT, you'll need to deal with it through NTFS permissions. For Windows 9x workstations, you would have to use a third-party product to lock the file-system.
