Synthetic Time Issued on a Partition

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I don't understand the message I'm seeing. What does "Synthetic time is being issued on partition..." mean and why is it important? -- Science Fiction Fan in South Dakota

A.

Dear Fan: Even though synthetic time sounds like a science fiction concept, it's really not. In NetWare 4 and 5, synthetic time is issued at servers with the error "DS- 4.63-12" if the server time is set backwards. The synthetic time will be cycled every 2 minutes until the server time is after the last modified timestamp.
