Using IP Printing to Print in a NetWare Environment

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I've heard there's a way to perform printing in a NetWare environment by just using the printer's IP network address, without going through a server. Can you tell me more?

A.

Dear IPP: If you know your printer's IP address and you are running NetWare 5.x with IP installed as your communications protocol, you certainly can print without going through any type of network server. NetWare 5.x servers come with IP Printing (IPP) enabled.

When you first put your printer on the network, write down the IP address that you assign to it. Then go to the client you want to print from, start up the Windows Add Printer Wizard in the Printers folder, and follow these steps:

When prompted for "Local Printer" or "Network printer," choose "Network Printer."

When prompted to "Locate your printer," click on "Connect to a printer on the Internet or on your intranet."

Enter the printer's IP address in the form of a URL. For example, http://aaa.aaa.aaa.aaa/ipp

Finish the printer installation process by loading the correct printer driver for printer you have selected.

That's all there is to it. When you finish installing the printer, you should be able to print directly to it whether your network server is up or not.
