Errors Running BackupExec 8.0 on NetWare 5.0

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I have a problem with a NetWare 5.0 server running on a Dell machine, using an Adaptec 160M SCSI card and an HP T20 tape drive. When I try to run BackupExec 8.0, I get the following message:

Module NWASPI.cmd has unresolved public symbols

BackupExec won't run, so I tried running SBACKUP. When I did this, everything loaded properly, but I got a message telling me no media was present. When I switched to the utilities screen and had it detect my media, my server abended. What do I do now?

Backing Down in Baku

A.

Dear Backing: The first thing you should know is that the official backup utility for NetWare 5.0 is SBCON, not SBACKUP. However, I've noticed a lot of discussion about continuing to use SBACKUP with NetWare 5.1. Those people who use SBACKUP with NetWare 5.1 agree on one thing: If you're going to use SBACKUP on NetWare 5, you must use the version of SMDI that came with it. Create a new subdirectory under SYS:SYSTEM to ensure that future service packs don't overwrite SMDI. That might be what's causing your abend situation. (Answer supplied by Dave Pluke of Novell)
