Q.

Dear Ab-end: My Reflection terminal hangs after switching from VT220 to HP Emulation after we upgraded from the Novell Client 3.21 to 3.3. What can I do?

Dear Reflecting: This could be a WinSock issue. Try either disabling the WinSock 2 Installation, which comes with any Novell Client v.3.0 or higher, or uninstalling the newer WinSock version on the faulty workstations.

The new WinSock is installed because Novell's SLP implementation and the IP Gateway both rely on WinSsock 2.0. To uninstall WinSock 2, run the WS2BAKUP.BAT file. During the installation, the file responsible for the update of WinSock copies the old files to the C:\Windos\ws2bakup directory. When you run the above file, the backed up files are copied back to the system. You then have to reboot and everything should work fine.

Once you have done this on the workstations that originally gave you the problem, you can avoid the problem on the other workstations by not installing WinSock 2 together with the Novell Client Installation procedure. Here's how to install the Novell Client 3.3 without WinSock 2.

In the NWSETUP.INI file, comment out the following line:

[Client.Run]
1=WS2NSINS.EXE /install,>=,1998
; (Comment this out to avoid the installation of Winsock 2)
2=WS2SETUP.EXE,<,1998
3=AXDIST.EXE,<,1111

Because of the dependencies described above, however, we do recommend using WinSock 2. If you have problems as described, we recommend installing WinSock separately from the Novell Client installation. The file W95WS2SETUP.EXE, available at http://www.microsoft.com , installs the new WinSock, but does so separately from the Novell Client. We haven't experienced any problems by installing WinSock 2 this way. (Answer supplied by Robert Koestler of Novell)
