Missing Console Prompt

Articles and Tips: qna

01 Feb 2001

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I want my console prompt back, now! Is there any way I can get it back without rebooting the server?

Waiting for a Prompt in Provo

A.

Dear Waiting: Well, you certainly didn't prompt me with much information. Fortunately, I can give a prompt response: Ctrl-Alt-Esc will promptly give you an alternate prompt. From there, you can either down the server or use another console session. This console session won't show the screens from the first session, though. However, remember that if your console is locked, you might have other problems. So, you should promptly schedule a server reboot. (Answer promptly supplied impromptu by Shaun Pond, Novell SysOp, and Chris Hutchins, North Texas, HIDTA Network Manager)
