Uneven Processor Utilization with NetWare 5.1 SP2

Dear Ab-end: I installed Service Pack 2 on my NetWare 5.1 server. It ran great for three days, then suddenly the server Processor 01 started getting heavily loaded at 80-82%, while Processor 2 started showing no load at all. I tried to unload some modules, but it didn't help. Then I tried to unload "broker," which resulted in a hung console and broker monitor. I tried to use the browser-based NetWare Management Portal to restart the server, but that resulted in an incomplete shutdown. I was able to restart without NDPS, but I'm just waiting for the next crash. What do I do?

Dear Crashing: I have good news--the fix should be fairly simple. Go to Monitor | Server Params | NCP settings and disable Client File Caching.
Or, at the server console, type:
Set client file caching enabled = off <Enter>
That should make things considerably better for you. By the way, make sure you include the ending "d" on "enabled". A lot of people get caught on that one. Also, make sure you have plenty of free blocks on your server; the SYS volume should have more than 1,000 of them. (Answer supplied by Al Hidalgo of the University of New Mexico, and Hamish Speirs)
