Excess .DSD and .DOD Files in the NetWare Directory

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: Oy server's SYS volume has an excessive amount of .DSD and .DOD files in the Netware directory, so many that I'm beginning to run out of disk space on a 1 GB volume! How can I clean up these files and get my disk space back?

Needing Space in Montana

A.

Dear Needing: I'm going to have to assume that you're running either NetWare 5 or 5.x and NDS 7.x. The DSD files are the actual NDS files. The DOD files are backup copies that NDS created during DSRepair. I'm also assuming that you're running Support Pack 3 or greater where sub-allocation was disabled for the NetWare directory.

If you re-enable sub-allocation, you should reclaim most of your disk space. To do this, apply SP4, OS5SP4A, and DS 7.45. Then, at the console, type

SET DSTRACE=*FSC

and wait for the console prompt to return. When the console prompt returns, your sub-allocation will be re-enabled. (Answer supplied by Israel Forst of Novell)
