Saving SET Values to a File

Q.

Dear Ab-end: How do I save NetWare 5 SET values to a file?

-- Settling Down in Seattle

A.

Dear Settling: NetWare 5 keeps all of the present SET parameters in its registry, which are then automatically executed the next time the server is brought up or restarted. To create files that contain NetWare 5 SET values, you might find the following two commands useful:

SAVE MODIFIED ENVIRONMENT <file.ext>
SAVE ENVIRONMENT <file.ext>

The first command creates a file in the root of volume SYS with the settings you'd normally see if you type the DISPLAY MODIFIED ENVIRONMENT command at the server console prompt.

The second command creates a file with the information you'd normally see if you type DISPLAY ENVIRONMENT <Enter> at the console prompt.

If you're experimenting with SET parameters and you want to be able to set everything back to its original state, you might want to prepend "SET" to each line of these output files and rename them to a <filename>.NCF file. You can then use this file to put the server back to its original state. (Answer provided by Paul Thompson of Novell)
