IP Addresses in a Cluster Environment

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: How exactly are IP addresses handled in a clustered Internet Caching System (ICS) environment? If this is done by DNS, is it possible to use NetWare 5.x DNS or Microsoft NT 4 DNS Servers?

A.

Dear Mixing: ICS clustering is configured using a "virtual address" for the service. When a box in the cluster fails, the address is automatically moved over to the next box in the cluster. Only the service is failed over, not the cache object store. A good recommendation is to set up as many cluster services as there are ICS boxes, and then set up DNS to have the same DNS name for all the services. This provides round-robin load balancing for the services, and if there is a failover, the services can continue without a hitch. You can use whichever type of DNS server you like.
