NDS eDirectory: Employee ID Field

Q.
Dear Ab-end: I have a customer who is trying to use the Employee ID field in NDS. The field exists in NDS, but they can't access it. I suggested they use ScheMax to add it to the page list, but they want to access it on the Identification page and want it to become a required field. I've heard that in the next release of NDS (version 8.5), key and field management tools will become available. But is there a way they can achieve their goals today?

Dear Fieldless: The beta version of NDS that was available before NetWare 5 shipped contained the definition for an "EmployeeNumber" field. The "Employee ID" field used in NetWare 5 and SP1 had a bad OID. The correct definition, "NSCP:employeeNumber", was introduced in the version 8 release of NDS. It is mapped to "employeeNumber" for LDAP operations. It is a case-insensitive string, not an integer. The current snap-ins don't expose this field, but you can write to it through any LDAP operation or through an LDIF file. (Answer provided by Subbu K. K., NDS Product Manager, Novell Bangalore)
