Network Storage: Writing to DVD-RAM

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I am trying to duplicate the trick you described in the January 2000 issue about making a DVD-RAM disc work like a CD-R (see question from "Tons of Data and No Way to Archive It," Novell AppNotes, January 2000, page 88). This would be a great solution to an annoying storage problem, but I wanted to make sure it works before I buy the software. I have downloaded the 30-day trial version of NTI''s CD-Maker 2000 Pro, but I cannot find where to set the size of the disc. I only can find check boxes for the format: ISO, Joliet, and so on.

Dear Backing Up: There's an easy answer to your question. In the new version of the software, you don't have to specify the disc size. You simply keep adding files into the recording list. If you go beyond 670 MB, the software displays an error message. Click Continue and keep adding files until you reach about 2 GB, leaving 0.6 GB or so for overhead (you may get by with a little less).

By the way, the Web site for NTI is now http://www.ntius.com. (Answer provided by the author of the original article--Dave Doering of TechVoice, Inc.)
