NetWare Servers: Loading LAN Drivers into Protected Memory

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: Can I load my LAN drivers into a protected memory address space? If not, why not?

A.

Dear Loaded: According to TID #10022134:

"LAN and disk drivers have to be able to do hardware-specific calls, like turning interrupts on/off; these functions are not allowable from protected space. This is defined by the processor. There are privileged instructions that are not allowed in "User" mode. In a protected address space (also called Ring 3), only User mode processor calls are allowed. "Supervisor" mode is only for Ring 0, which means these calls can only execute in the kernel."

For more information on how to use protected and virtual memory in NetWare, see TID #10022134.
