NetWare 5.1: Having Load Balancing with Pure IP

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: The customer I am engaged with is planning to have a NetWare 5.1 and Pure IP environment. He would like to know if it is possible to have load balancing on NetWare 5.1 over IP. I know that IPX load balancing is possible but I can't remember seeing information on load balancing over IP.

Dear Balancing: The Novell TID #2926169 describes the mechanisms for achieving Load Balancing IPX in a NetWare 4.1x environment. Novell Consulting believes that this approach will work equally well in a NetWare 5.1 server environment. As of April 2000, the Novell TID #10018756 states that load balancing cannot be natively enabled for TCP/IP, and that third-party software is required.

The Novell Web Site http://developer.novell.com provides a listing of approved products for such a task. The only product matching the criteria of load balancing in a NetWare environment is that of "Intel Advanced Networking Services" which has been certified for NetWare 5. However, others may be added, so check Novell's Developer web site often. For further information on the Intel solution, visithttp://support.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/30469.htm.
