Security: Backing Up a Volume Protected with NMAS

Articles and Tips: qna

Q.

Dear Ab-end: I have a volume named X-FILES that I have secured through a Novell Modular Authentication Services (NMAS) label. Users are required to have X-FILES clearance (or above) in order to read this volume. Will my automated backup software be able to authenticate to this volume in order to get the read access it needs to back it up?

A.

Dear Curious: A program can access restricted volumes only if it runs in Ring 0 (like NetBasic or Toolbox). Regular backup programs (including the SBACKUP utility) use Novell's APIs and therefore can't access these volumes. Novell's NMAS and Backup engineering teams are looking into this matter.
