Q.

Dear Ab-end: How can I tell which version of NICI I have running on my NetWare 5 server?

--Nicked in Nashville

A.

Dear Nicked: The acronym "NICI" stands for Novell International Cryptographic Infrastructure. This is the base set of cryptographic services that are available with NetWare 5. All NICI modules are cryptographically signed for module authentication, and all Novell services that use cryptography are written to NICI specifications. The NICI architecture takes a modular approach that allows you to add new cryptographic algorithms without having to bring the server down.

To see which version of NICI is running on your NetWare 5 servers, type "MODULES XENG* <Enter>" at the server's console prompt. If you see the XENGUSC.NLM (the NICI U.S./Canada XENG from Novell, Inc) module listed, cryptography is running with key sizes up through 2048 bits. If you see the XENGEXP.NLM (the NICI Worldwide XENG from Novell, Inc) module, cryptography is running with key sizes up through 512 bits. If you see the XENGNUL.NLM (the NICI NULL XENG from Novell, Inc) module, your server is running with no cryptography. (Be aware that Novell's PKIS-Public Key Infrastructure Services-will not run with the Null cryptography NLM installed.)
