Preventing Users from Sending Messages

Dear Ab-end: I don't want my users to send messages (it's a big time-waster). I've blocked them from using the DOS SEND utility in the login script, but the newer versions of the NetWare Client set up an "N" in the System Tray that includes an option for users to send messages. Can I block this somehow?

Dear Blocking: That's an easy one. From Control Panel, go into Client Properties. Then select Advanced Settings | Parameter Group | Graphical Interface. You can also set this using ZENworks, a NAL object or, if you like doing things the hard way, a policy file.
Another way to do the same thing is to go to properties for Network Neighborhood, select the Novell NetWare Client and then go to Properties for the client. Open the Advanced Settings tab. One of the settings here is "Show Novell System Tray Icon". Set this to No and the "N" will disappear. There are other settings here you may want to explore such as "Send Message" and "Show User Administration xMenu". Novell Technical Support has produced a TID on this very subject. Refer to TID #2936632 at:
To automatically disable the red N icon completely during installation of the Novell Client for Windows 95/98 or NT, use the Novell Client Install Manager (NCIMAN). Set "Show Novell System Tray Icon" to Off, then save and use the resulting UNATTEND.TXT file (obtained by launching with SETUP /U). For more information on the Client Installation, refer to the HTML documentation provided on the Client/ZENworks Starter Pack CD available from the Novell Free Downloads page.
