Q.

Dear Ab-end: I'm trying to load the NetWare server MONITOR utility into protected memory. To do this, I'm typing the following at the server console:

LOAD PROTECTED MONITOR.NLM <Enter>

All I get is public symbol errors. Does this mean that only certain NLMs can be loaded in a protected address space?

A.

Dear Worried: The MONITOR utility does not run in protected memory, nor will any device drivers that perform direct hardware input/output routines. The MONITOR utility accesses internal lists that can't be accessed from a protected address space. Changing this would break the memory protection scheme, creating a potential to fault the server instead of just the protected space. (For more information about protected memory and NetWare, look up Technical Information Document #2940986 entitled "NetWare 5 Core OS/Memory FAQ.")
