Q.
Dear Ab-end: I have a NetWare 3.12 network and I'm told that the NetWare NCOPY utility does not preserve trustee assignments when you copy files from one volume/directory/server to another. Is there any utility out there that will include the trustee assignments when you copy files from one directory destination to another?

Dear Hopeful: For NetWare 3.x, NetWare 4.x, and intraNetWare networks, you can use the TCOPY utility that is available on the Novell Support Connection web site. Go to the search page at http://support.novell.com/search and perform a Knowledgebase search on the word TCOPY to see the text and to download the file. Or you can use File Finder and search for TCOPY1.EXE to retrieve the file. (The TCOPY utility also comes on the NetWare 3.2 Enhancement Pack and on the monthly Novell Support Connection CD.)
The directions for TCOPY are simple. At the DOS prompt, type
TCOPY <source> [destination] [/S ] <Enter>
The "/S" option copies trustees in the current directory and all of its subdirectories.
The TCOPY utility copies trustee assignments and inherited rights filters from one directory structure to another. The source and destination do not have to be on the same volume or even on the same server. If no destination is specified, TCOPY defaults to the current directory. Note that the files themselves are not copied, only the trustee assignments and inherited rights filters.
