Dear Ab-end: I was creating a table to keep track of the versions of the many files we use in IntranetWare/NetWare 4.11. I noticed that in the latest support pack, IWSP4a.EXE, there are 17 duplicate sets of files scattered about. I know why there are duplicates, but why are 9 of those 17 duplicate sets of files different? They have different dates, times and sizes for the same file! This job of keeping track of file versions is hard enough without having a number of different versions of the same file on the same support pack update!

Dear Duped: The newer support pack comes with various editions of support files that are loaded depending on the version of products you have installed on the server. This is done for product compatibility with your installed product base.

As you install the service pack, the service pack will look at the products you have installed and update those support files accordingly. If you see newer versions of the support files on the support pack than the ones that are copied to your system, that means you do not have the product(s) that need(s) a newer version of the support files in order to work. In fact, it might be just the opposite--you need an older version of the support files so that those products can work.

If you update a legacy server product to a newer version, you might want to rerun the service pack. The service pack will see the newer version of the product and copy the appropriate support files. This will help ensure that the server has the most current support files for the applications you are running.
