Q.

Dear Ab-end: What's the skinny on using ATM network boards with Novell's SFT III products? I've heard that the two don't exactly get along well together. Tell me it isn't true!

Dear Hopeful: I hate to burst your bubble, so I'll refer you to Technical Information Document (TID) 2929716, which states Novell's current position concerning the use of ATM boards in an SFT III environment. To quote from the TID:

"Many NetWare users are attempting to use ATM technology as a LAN channel in an SFT3 environment. ATM is not currently supported by Novell on any of the SFT3 platforms.

SFT3 NetWare was designed such that the throughput of the MSL link needs to be faster and have a greater bandwidth than that of the LAN channel. If the LAN channel is faster than the MSL link, then the communications across the MSL link can bottleneck producing a "Queue overrun" or other failure. There are also delay issues involved with ATM that cause serious problems with SFT3 that for now cannot be overcome.

Do not use ATM LAN technology with IntranetWare 4.11 SFT3, NetWare 4.10 SFT3 nor NetWare 3.11 SFT3."
