Q.

Dear Ab-end: recently downloaded the latest version of NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 for my workstations. Everything seems to be working fine except a "Network Status" box keeps popping up for no apparent reason. Any clues as to why this is happening?

Dear Not: In some of the more recent versions of Client 32 for Windows 95, the Net Status Timeout SET parameter is preset to 10 seconds instead of its previous setting of 30. This change in the default setting was in response to Client 32 taking too long to let go of connections to services that were no longer available. However, the setting of 10 may not be long enough for some network configurations, which means you start seeing "Network Status" box messages.

To fix this problem, Alt+double-click the Network Neighborhood icon on the Windows 95 desktop. Double-click the Novell NetWare Client 32 entry to bring up its Properties page, then click on the Advanced Settings tab. Choose the Net Status Timeout entry and change it a higher number, such as 15 or 20 seconds; if that doesn't work, try 30 seconds.

Remember that the higher the number, the longer the wait to discontinue Client 32's reattachment capabilities. Since each network is different, you might have to play with this setting a little to eliminate the "Network Status" box messages.
