Dear Ab-end: hen my NetWare 4.11 server abends, it goes through a recovery technique that brings it back to working state. That's great, but when I try to DOWN the server, it seems to be caught in this virtual recovery procedure. I don't seem to ever get out to the exit prompt so I can go to DOS. How can I get out of the recovery cycle?

Dear Down: In IntranetWare 1.0 (NetWare 4.11), there is an undocumented command that lets you down the server from an abended state and get you out to DOS. Press and hold down the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Esc keys in that order. You will see the message "Down the File Server and Exit to DOS Y/N" appear on the console screen. Type "Y" to exit to DOS. Unfortunately, this command is not available in earlier versions of NetWare.
