Q.

Dear Ab-end: 'm trying to get Norton Navigator for Windows 95 to work with Novell's Client 32 for Windows 95. Every time I try to launch the Norton File Manager, I get a "Flmgr error message". When I press the Details button, it shows me that the USER.EXE file from Client 32 is the culprit. Is there a fix for this problem?

A.

Dear Nuts: Because Client 32 for Windows 95 is a a shell rather than a requester, it hooks all Int 21h calls at the beginning of the initialization process in order to increase performance and make local caching and other elements work correctly. Consequently, applications that also want to hook all Int 21h calls for file handle acquisition and manipulation return an error message stating that their file manager is being excluded from Int 21h access, pointing to USER.EXE as the culprit.

The easiest way around this problem is to press <Escape< at the Client 32 login screen until the Norton File Manager loads, then use the LOGINW95.EXE utility that is found in the C:\NOVELL\CLIENT32 directory to log in to the network. (You can create a shortcut to LOGINW95 and place it on the desktop for faster access.) This way, Client 32 loads after the Norton File Manager and Norton works fine.

Check Symantec's web site at sos.symantec.com/ftp/index.htm for an update file for Norton Navigator. Click on the "Select A Product" arrow near the View Files entry and select Norton Navigator, the press View Files. If you have version 1.0 of Norton Navigator for Windows 95, select the 1-TO-95B.EXE file, download it, then run the update patch. The fixes in there work fine with my version of Client 32 for Windows 95.
