Q.

Dear Ab-end: I just downloaded the OS patch files for NetWare 3.12. How does LSWAP work with LOADER, and which LSWAP do I use: LSWAP.EXE or LSWAP.NLM?

A.

Dear Loaded: LOADER.EXE is a static patch file that updates the LOADER code that is currently part of the SERVER.EXE source code. To place the new LOADER code into SERVER.EXE, you need to run LSWAP.EXE (if your server is not presently running) or the LSWAP.NLM (if your server is up and running at this time). You only need to run LSWAP once, for it then takes the LOADER code found in the LOADER.EXE file and places that code into SERVER.EXE.

However, you don't have to do this if you download the 312PTA.EXE file, insert a floppy diskette into A: drive and type 312PTA A: <Enter>. This decompresses the patch files to the floppy diskette. Then insert the diskette in the server and type LOAD A:\PATCH312.NLM <Enter> at the server console prompt. The PATCH312.NLM will copy all of the patch files where they are needed, including LOADER.EXE, LSWAP.EXE, and LSWAP.NLM, and make the necessary changes in the STARTUP.NCF file for the patch manager to work. Then once you bring up the server again, everything is in place.

If you are manually setting up the update process, you'll need to copy LOADER.EXE and the two LSWAP files into the SERVER.EXE directory and then run either LSWAP.EXE if the server is not running or LSWAP.NLM if the server is running. If you run LSWAP.EXE, the LOADER code is placed in SERVER.EXE and will be available the next time you boot the NetWare server. If your server is already running (which is the state that the update patches believes you are in), the update routine places three files (LOADER.EXE, LSWAP.EXE and LSWAP.NLM) in the directory where the SERVER.EXE is located and automatically runs LSWAP.NLM to update the LOADER code. You then must down the server and bring it back up again in order to have SERVER.EXE run with the new LOADER code in it. Again, you only have to do this once.
