Q.

Dear Ab-end: I just got a new Dell workstation that came with Windows 95 preloaded. After loading CorelDRAW 6 and rebooting, the Windows 95 screen fonts displayed on the desktop were not the original system fonts. I tried to change them by going into Properties/Appearance and selecting another font, but only two fonts were listed in the drop-down box: "System" and "FixedSys." What's going on?

Dear Hacker: On some Dell computers, having too many fonts installed on the system during setup can cause Windows 95 to lose the ability to properly manage fonts. To remedy the situation, do the following:

  1. Reboot Windows 95 in Safe Mode.

  2. Go into the CONTROL PANEL and select the FONTS folder. EDIT\SELECT ALL and delete all the fonts except the ones with the little red "A".

  3. Re-install CorelDRAW 6, but choose Custom Install. Install all Filter and the default group of "True Type Fonts".

When you reboot, your screen fonts should be okay. If you want to install other fonts, do so from the Control Panel/Fonts folder. Open the folder, select Fonts from the menu bar, then select File/Install New Font and install the fonts from the CorelDRAW 6 CD-ROM.
