Q.
Dear Ab-end: I keep getting a Directory Services error -625 on my NetWare 4 server. What kind of an error is that and what do I do about it?

A.
Dear Struck: The Directory Services -625 error is usually caused by a transport failure, which makes it a communication error. The error means that your server cannot communicate with a destination server for DS updates, and this is almost always a LAN issue.
Some of the symptoms you see relating to this problem include the server on which the error message appears being unable to synchronize with the master time server, or you may see the message "Unable to communicate with server" on the server console. Sometimes this error appears when you try to run the RCONSOLE utility to access the destination server, or when the destination server appears and disappears in the "Display Servers" list.
Here are some Novell support tips for things to check:
Ensure that the destination server is up and running.
Ensure that SAP types 26B and 278 are not being filtered.
Ensure that the drivers for your network cards have been certified by Novell. If the driver has not been certified, the workstation may still be able to communicate but server-to-server communication may fail. (For a complete list of certified drivers, call the Novell Labs FAXBACK at 1800 414-5227).
Check the network cabling and the LAN card.
