Dear Ab-end: Nothing personal, but my server just experienced an "abend" with a Machine Check Processor Exception. Is this a software or a hardware problem?

Dear Unsure: Now that's a question I can really relate to! This particular problem is a hardware failure that can only occur with a Pentium processor. It's an internal CPU cache error that the CPU generates. Unfortunately, it indicates a rather severe memory problem in the CPU itself. Replace the CPU and/or the board the CPU plugs into (the system board or the CPU plug-in board). You may also need to replace any card in the server that has memory installed on it.
