Q.

Dear Ab-end: When I set up printers in the Windows 95 Printer Wizard using the NetWare Client 32 for Window 95, I keep getting an error message telling me that the printer is offline. What can I do to get around this problem?

Dear Apprentice: Between the open beta and the actual released product, the NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 changed the way it parses the path to the printer object. This caused the path to change in the Win95 Printer Wizard for each printer that is created. The result of the change is a problem parsing the path when the NetWare 4.x tree has the same name as a server in the tree (or a NetWare 3.x server).

Here are some of the ways around this problem:

  1. Delete the printer and recreate it using the released version of NetWare Client 32.

  2. Check that the print queue does not contain illegal characters in its name.

  3. If you are using NetWare 4.x and the tree name is the same as a server name, rename the server or tree to ensure that no server on the LAN contains the same name as an NDS tree on the LAN. (Novell is working on a solution to resolve the duplicate tree name/server name issue.)
