Q.
Dear Ab-end: How do you set up long name support for Windows 95 on NetWare?
--Long In the Name
A.
Dear Long: What's the matter, eight characters and an extension aren't enough for you? Well, if you must have those long names, load the OS2.NAM name space support by placing the following commands in the STARTUP.NCF file:
Load OS2.NAM ADD NAME SPACE OS2 TO SYS: (or whatever volume you want to add it to)
The DOS representation of long file names is a little different between Windows 95 and NetWare. For example, a file with (10 characters plus extension) called XXXXXXXXXX.XXX in Windows 95 will be displayed as XXXXXX~1.XXX, while that same file on a NetWare drive will be displayed as XXXXXXXX.XXX (eight characters plus extension).
If you have a second file (11 characters plus extension) called XXXXXXXXXXX.XXX, Windows 95 will display that file as XXXXXX~2.XXX, while the same file on a NetWare drive will be displayed as XXXXXXX0.XXX. Once you get used to the difference in interpretation, you'll get along fine.
