Q.
Dear Ab-end: Now that I've upgraded to NetWare 4.1 from NetWare 3.x, my search drives seem to work differently. How can I get them to behave like they used to?

A.
Dear Hates Change: You are correct in noting that the way in which rooted search drives are stored in the path has changed between NetWare versions 3.x and 4.x. For the command:
MAP ROOT S1:=SYS:\PUBLIC
NetWare 3.x reflects the mapping as:
PATH=Z:.
The "dot" after Z: signifies that the current directory will be searched. So, if you change directories from SYS:PUBLIC to, say, SYS:PUBLIC\APPLICATION, the APPLICATION directory will be searched.
NetWare 4.x uses a backslash, such as:
PATH=Z:\
This way, the root is always searched, no matter what your current directory is.
Due to customer requests for utilities that allow map root search drives to work the way they did prior to this change, Novell has released new versions of MAP.EXE and LOGIN.EXE. The new files can be downloaded from CompuServe. Go NWOSFILES and look for MAP412.EXE and LOG412.EXE in section 2.
