Indications

You should apply this patch if you use autofs heavily and experience duplicate entries in the /etc/mtab file.

Problem description

This patch fixes a problem with NFS mounted file systems and duplicate lines in the /etc/mtab file. The mtab file is used by the mount command to record the list of currently mounted file systems.
The problem addressed by this patch can occur if you use several NFS file systems mounted via autofs, and trigger a mount of these at the same time (for instance by running maintenance scripts etc). When autofs later unmounts these file systems simultaneously, it is possible that not all mtab entries are removed correctly, causing the file to grow without bounds if this happens repeatedly. This can occur because the timeout used by umount when it detects a conflicting lock on the mtab file is too low.

Solution

Please install the updates provided at the location noted below.

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Uvh util-linux.rpm
