Applies to

Product(s): SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for IBM S/390 and IBM zSeries

Release: 20040210

Everyone using the Linux kernel on S/390 architecture should update

Problem description

This kernel update addresses several security problems that can lead
from local denial-of-service to local root access:
  • ncpfs/ncp_lookup: buffer overflow with the possibility to gain root privileges. (CAN-2004-0010)
  • execve(): malformed elf binaries can lead to a local denial-of-service attack.
  • mremap(): a new bug found by Paul Starzetz that can lead to local root access. (CAN-2004-0077)
Additionally, a few bugfixes are included to fix problems with SCSI starvation, lvm-mp, LAuS and NFS.

Installation notes

This update is provided as an RPM package that can easily be installed onto a running system by using this command:
rpm -Fvh k_deflt.rpm
If you need the kernel sources you can install them by using the command:
rpm -Uvh kernel-source.rpm
Finally, reboot the system with
shutdown -r now
to load the new kernel (replace "now" with the appropriate amount of time to allow local users to cleanly log out, for example "+5" for five minutes.)
